Kent Ohio

Location: Kent Ohio

Date: 6/25/11

Weather: high 60s light wind out of the west

Length of this skate:  10 - 15 miles

Sport complex at Kent State University

Kent State University and the paved part of the Portage Hike and Bike Trail is a nice skate.  The bike path is not paved past Lake Rockwell St. (See Google Map Link) School was out and it was a Saturday so I had the college to myself.  The area is somewhat hilly.  The area between the college and the Portage Hike and Bike Trail is mostly old narrow sidewalks.  I didn’t try very many of the back roads and the ones I did had crap for sidewalks and too much traffic to skate on easily.
Downtown Kent has a quaint old town area.
The mighty Cuyahoga River and two mainline railroad tracks flow through the center of town.  They are both well below the level of the town.
The town and Kent State University are taking good advantage of the Cuyahoga River.  Crooked River Adventures, run by the college, rents canoes, kayaks, tubes, and bikes.  You can canoe, kayak, or tube down the river and they will take you back or for $5 lend you a bike to ride back on the Portage Trail.  What a great idea.  http://www.kent.edu/crookedriver/index.cfm
Ideas for next time I’m in the area:
Take my Kayak to see more of the river
Take my bike to see more of the Portage Trail
Take both

Old bridge next to the Portage Hike and Bike Trail

Remnants of on old lock on the Cuyahoga

Disclaimer: Skating is inherently dangerous.  Staking on streets and sidewalks is       nuts.  This blog is not a recommendation to try these ideas.  This blog is a diary of my skates.  I do not recommend anyone try any of these ideas.
